The number of miles in a half marathon.
This is my brother Dan and I after the 500 Festival Mini Marathon in Indianapolis.
It is the largest half in the country, bringing in 35,000 participants. I was the 14,008th finisher. I'm never going to impress anyone with my time. I was just happy to run it all. Tickets were sold out in January so we bought our bibs off Craig's List. Your name is on the bib, so at every water stop a volunteer would say, "Come on Kaitlyn. Almost there."
We started in corrals A-Z based on our estimated finish time. I met a nice guy, about 50 years old (yeah that's how fast I am) in my corral. I was asking questions about how things would go down, it became obvious that this was my first half marathon and he gave me great advice:
"You're not going to win."
I laughed. "Yeah, well neither are you!"
He meant just take it easy, don't rush. So I paced myself.
This is the Indianapolis 500 race track. We ran around it once during the event, it's 2.5 miles.
I've never been much of a runner. I signed up because my brother did. And of course, I thought maybe I'd lose the last few baby pounds training for it. (No such luck) As I was preparing for it I thought, I hate to run. This is not fun. Why am I doing this? I convinced myself to continue and after it was over I would check it off my bucket list and throw in the towel. But it turns out, I really enjoyed it. Finishing the race not only provided a sense of accomplishment, but it gave meaning to all the runs that led up to the mini. I am totally doing another one. Next time, with Jess.
Oh and this is a random thought I had today at lunch,
Croutons are the reason I eat salad.
